ENGW 101 : Rhetoric, Inquiry, and Critical Writing

The first semester writing course requirement for First-Year Writing. Study rhetoric as a critical approach to writing, in addition to specific principles and conventions of expository writing. Engage in critical thinking, explore ideas, and learn organization, grammatical correctness, and discuss contemporary issues through writing. (Upon completion of this course, register for ENGW 103).

ENGW 102 : Expository Wrtg & Literacy Stu

The first course of the two-semester required writing course requirement for First-Year Writing. This course introduces students to rhetoric as a critical approach to writing, in addition to specific principles and conventions of expository writing. English Writing 102 stresses critical thinking, the exploration of ideas, and the development of voice in writing. Students will be expected to engage in discussion of contemporary issues through class discussion and their writing. NOTE: Upon completion of this course students should register for ENGW 103. Successful completion of this First Year Writing course requires a grade of or higher

ENGW 103 : Persuasive Writing and Research

The second course of the two-semester required writing course requirement for First-Year Writing. Build on the study of rhetoric begun in ENGW 101 or 102. Study argumentation and persuasive writing techniques, in addition to the conventions of academic research. Examine counterarguments, explore primary and secondary sources, and learn academic style conventions. Engage in discussion of contemporary issues through class discussion and their writing.

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: Successful completion of ENGW 101 or 102 with a grade of or higher. Note: Successful completion of this First Year Writing course requires a grade of or higher.

ENGW 104 : Writing, Literacy, and Discourse

The first course of the required two-semester First-Year Writing with an emphasis on Writing Studies. Explore Writing Studies, a field that focuses on the production, circulation, and values of academic and other forms of writing. Examine theories about writing and gain a deep understanding of the writing process and certain forms of professional writing. Engage in discussion of contemporary issues and to develop a digital portfolio as a capstone project for the course.

Prerequisites

Upon completion of this course students should register for ENGW 105. NOTE: Successful completion of this First Year Writing course requires a grade of or higher.

ENGW 105 : Reflective Writing and Portfolios

This second course of the required two-semester First-Year Writing. Build on the study of writing begun in ENGW 104. Study the habits of mind employed by seasoned writers of all professions. Explore the conventions of academic research and engage in the self-examination and the exploration of professional writing conventions as well as the philosophy of writing. Discuss contemporary issues in class and to develop a digital portfolio as a capstone project for the course.
