MUSG 003 : Voice Instruction

Study private classical voice lessons in one-on-one sessions. Learn a healthy technique using standard art song, folk song and spiritual repertoire. Perform a final exam/jury at the end of each semester. May berepeated.

MUSG 031 : Voice Class for Instr Majors

Explore the voice in a group class setting. Designed for music education majors intended to teach a healthy singing technique for the student and offer instruction on age-appropriate materials for K-12 singers. Examining repertoire including standard art song, folk song, spiritual, and music theatre.

Learn the principles of breathing, phonetics, and diction, vocalises for sustained singing with individual instrcuton. Understand scales and arpeggios, five English songs, and songs of the black heritage. Learn contemporary commercial music if a Music Therapy major. Course content is specific to the technical abilities of the student.

Prepare a 30-minute recital featuring repertoire of the Baroque, Classic, Romantic, 20th and 21st centuries, including art songs or operatic arias by African American Composers. Student register for MUTO 112. A jury may be required.

MUSG 155 : Solo Vocal Literature

Explore the evolution of Western art song literature from the Classic period to modern day. Learn to place composers within their historical context and chart the evolution of German, French and American art song, noting characteristics of each genre.

Explore the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), utilizing it to learn correct pronunciation and articulation for singing literature in English, Latin and Italian. Fall semester only.

Explore various articulations and pronunciations of French and German literature using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Study song delivery, stylistic interpretation, lyrical interpretation. performance practices, etc, Explore various literature through weekly listening examples, class performance.

MUSG 255 : Voice Pedagogy

A systemic study of voice anatomy and acoustics. Development of the vocal mechanism from childhood to maturity. Focus is placed on teaching K-12 music and private lesson strategies. identification and corrections of vocal defects, exploration of vocal health issues and practice teaching.  Fall only.
