JAPN 001 : Japanese I

Develops the basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). A proficiency-oriented approach is used in the course.No prerequisite.

JAPN 002 : Japanese II

Reinforces the range of skills practiced in Japanese 001, while focusing on expanding the student's vocabulary and fluency. The emphasis is on active participation as a means of expanding speaking, listening, reading and writing skills introduced in Japanese 001. Students are prepared to handle real situations in foreign culture. Prerequisite: JAPN 001

JAPN 003 : Japanese III

Enhances speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Japanese. Cultural activities are included to enable students to appreciate cultural nuances in the target language. Prerequisite: JAPN 002

JAPN 004 : Japanese IV

Sharpens the skills of speaking the Japanese language with an audiovisual approach. Literary texts are studied. Allows students to communicate information on a variety of topics, familiar and unfamiliar, with confidence and ease. Prerequisite: JAPN 003

JAPN 040 : Grammar Review

Solidifies major elements of of Japanese grammar to increase students' skills in the language. As a core course in the minor sequence of Japanese, it provides students with sufficient control of basic grammatical elements of the language to increase accuracy in their functionality. Prerequisite: JAPN 004

JAPN 050 : Oral Expression I

Develops speaking and listening skills through a variety of instructional strategies. Enables students to increase fluency in speaking about a variety of topics. Prerequisite: JAPN 040

JAPN 052 : Reading Writing Workshop

Develops specific skills of reading and writing in Japanese. Students continue to learn how to read and write using the Japanese script. Prerequisite: JAPN 040

JAPN 190 : Independent Study I

Provides continued guidance to the student in research on a specific topic or project. Enables students to continue to investigate a specific topic of their interest and analyze it. Students are guided by a faculty mentor. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.
