SWAH 001 : Swahili I

Exposes students to the basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). A proficiency-oriented approach is used in the course.

SWAH 002 : Swahili II

Reinforces the range of skills practiced in Swahili 001, while focusing on expanding the student's vocabulary and fluency. The emphasis is on active participation as a means of expanding speaking, listening, reading and writing skills introduced in Swahili 001. Students are prepared to handle real situations in foreign culture. Prerequisite: Swahili 1 or placement by instructor.

Enhances speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Swahili. Cultural activities are included to allow students to appreciate cultural nuances in the target language. Prerequisite: Swahili II or placement by instructor.

Expands the skills acquired in Swahili 003, with with formulation of more complex thoughts, usage of richer vocabulary and incorporation of cultural excursions.

Strengthens heritage learners speaking abilities with advanced language proficiency to increase their linguistic and cultural knowledge of the Swahili speaking world of East and Central Africa and the diaspora.

Strengthens and expands the speaking and listening skills through a variety of instructional strategies. Enables students to increase fluency in speaking about a variety of topics. Prerequisite: SWAH 004

Fosters understanding of advanced rules and techniques of the target language. Allows student to speak with eloquence on a variety of topics in the target language. Prerequisites: SWAH 040.

Explores contemporary Swahili literature in translation. Enables students to build a better understanding of the Swahili society in a language they are familiar with. No prerequisites.
