FASH 009 : Fashion Studio I: Beginning Construction

Learn beginning clothing construction techniques, pattern analysis, and garment evaluation while developing an understanding of terminology, industry skills, and tools. Study the foundation for design leading to the presentation of the majors' final collections. Understand commercial patterns and use of a sewing machine.

Explore the social, economic, cultural, geographical, historical, and political forces which have impacted the decisions of African Americans in the United States with respect to clothing and appearance. Learn about the contributions of African Americans to the fashion industry and global culture.

Study materials and manufacturing techniques for various fashion and home interiors textile products derived from raw and manmade sources. Explore sustainable practices for selection, use, care, and disposal alongside a textile testing lab component.

Study consumer sewing construction techniques as well as sewing techniques for the industry. Apply construction techniques to a variety of projects. Broaden knowledge about commercial patterns and select tools. Specific garment types may be focused upon.

Learn the basic principles of drawing for the fashion industry with a focus on basic fashion figure features and proportions, croquis development, rendering techniques for garment and accessory details. Develop pieces for the portfolio.

Complete a supervised internship or work experience in a commercial, non-profit, or governmental agency related to fashion for a minimum of one hundred (100) hours.

FASH 169 : Fieldwork in Fashion

Explore the conceptualization and development of a fashion-related business through the creation of a comprehensive business plan and participation in related entrepreneurial activities.
