English as a Second Language

Introduces beginning level English-language instruction for speakers of other languages. Developmental practice in all language skills: grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Prerequisite: Departmental approval

Introduces students to strategies for reading and writing interdisciplinary papers.Through a variety of short readings, students will learn to work through jargon-laden texts and gain confidence in their ability to read academic papers. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Develops intermediate social and pre-academic listening and speaking skills through situational activities. Students will express ideas and opinions in small groups and learn to understand and react appropriately. Introduces note-taking skills and comprehension of academically oriented materials. Pronunciation and listening discrimination skills are built upon and refined. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Improves English language skills acquired in level 1. Sharpens techniques for better pronunciation. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Strengthens and solidifies English oral skills acquired in lower level while expanding vocabulary and written proficiency. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Reinforces more advanced social and academic listening and speaking skills through situational activities. Students express ideas and opinions and continue to learn to understand and react appropriately. Prerequisite: ESOL 5

Trains students on how to use writing as a way to communicate in English language as well as other disciplines. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Focuses on advanced training in using written skills to master the nuances of the target language. Prerequisites: Departmental approval

Expands the usage of specific types of writing ( persona, academic or professional), in various disciplines. Prerequisites: Departmental approval.
